The project TRANSPORT.SAF.ER (\u201cUpgrading multimodal transport and road safety in cross-border area\u201d) is a cross-border cooperation project implemented under the Interreg VI-A IPA CBC \u201cGreece\u2013Albania 2021\u20132027\u201d Programme, Priority Axis 2 \u2013 Improving accessibility in the cross-border area and Specific Objective RSO3.2 \u2013 Sustainable transport. With a total budget of \u20ac1.443.438,30, co-financed by the EU, the project brings together three public authorities: \u2013 the Region of Epirus (Lead Beneficiary), the Region of Ionian Islands (Project Beneficiary 2) and the Regional Council of Vlora (Project Beneficiary 3).<\/p>\n
TRANSPORT.SAF.ER aims to strengthen multimodal accessibility & create a common policy in improving road safety framework in the Greece\u2013Albania border area. The partners will identify road safety hazards, legislation & road design regulations bottlenecks, and suggest counter measures, practices & solutions for improving the current state of play & mitigating its impact. Through targeted flagship interventions in Ioannina, Corfu and Vlora, that focus on key transport nodes near airports (GR) & environmentally sensitive areas (AL), combined with joint planning, institutional cooperation and capacity-building activities, the project promotes an solid upgrade in road safety planning & aims to upskill the respective technical workforce, involved in road planning & construction.<\/p>\n
The Region of Ionian Islands, as Project Beneficiary 2, participates in TRANSPORT.SAF.ER with a budget of \u20ac233.448,70. Its flagship intervention focuses on the \u201cKampaniolou\u201d junction area, where the regional Corfu-Pelekas Road connects with municipal Katsimidis Road, and will replace the existing signalized intersection with a new roundabout. Due to its proximity to Corfu Airport and its function as the primary gateway to and from northern Corfu via the regional road network, the junction experiences frequent congestion and a high number of safety incidents. The construction of the roundabout will enhance road safety, reduce delays, and provide smoother, more reliable connections between Corfu Airport, the city centre, and northern Corfu. Through this intervention, the Region of Ionian Islands contributes to the development of a safer and more efficient road network in the Greece\u2013Albania cross-border area.<\/p>\n
